There's nothing bad to be said about anybody who is fooled by a narcissist. We are talking about mass-manipulators here, and these are the kinds of people who can pull the wool over anybody's eyes.

They're genuinely clever with their charm, and they just "get" you like nobody else has before, right?

That feeling of being truly seen for the first time? It's manufactured. They studied you long enough to hand back a mirror, and you called it love.

This type of charm cannot be hidden forever. Eventually, like all things fake, it all falls apart. I want to talk about that problem, so you see that actually, underneath the performance, they're pretty stupid people.

Overview infographic of how a narcissist's charm eventually falls apart

1 Hooking you in and refusing to see when it's over

Think back to that time you first met the narcissist in your life. Did you feel as though you'd met the person of your dreams, the charming soul that was to be your forever partner? Did you fall for their tricks?

Did you believe them when they told you that they've never met anyone like you, and that you're their official soulmate? I'm not surprised if you did fall for it; narcissists are very convincing people.

They fool as much as they fake, and you had no real reference to the real person they are, so you thought quite innocently that who they presented as, was the real them. You had no idea what was coming, and why should you?

There's no instruction guide for these people (if there were, I'd be writing it!)

It got to a point where they'd tell you that you're overreacting, and of course, you'd believe them. They'd later deny what you accused them of saying, and you sit back with your own memory, wondering if there's something wrong with it.

They tell you that nobody else they know has a problem with them, so it must be you who is going crazy and being too pushy, needy, or unfair.

I had a woman tell me last month, "He said his ex never made a fuss about any of this." Of course she didn't. She wasn't real.

You think, "Maybe they've got a point."

The first time the narcissist does this is enough to make you feel as though you should believe them, because up until now, they've been so accurate with everything else. That's exactly what they were counting on.

2 The same old thing…

Right as you think the narcissist is clever and can fool nobody, you'll learn the opposite to be true. In this case, the cleverness the narcissist has pushed onto you starts to crumble, due to its weak foundations. Take a smart person, and I mean a genuinely smart person.

They enter a room and adjust to the mood, the vibe, the people. They pivot if something isn't working in that room, chatting naturally with who they can, or who they're comfortable with. A narcissist, oh boy. These people are tone deaf. They do not read rooms, they command them.

That's not as good as it sounds, because commanding means you expect everyone to tolerate you no matter how much of an entitled brat you're being. They love to find what works and run with it with everyone, like a 'one size fits all' type of situation.

Let me tell you, one size does not fit all. It'll be the same old guilt trips, the same huge apology field with drama that actually means nothing, and the same silent treatments.

When you try to leave, they will work their 'magic' once, but they will do the very same thing time and time thereafter, just because it worked with you the first time.

And here's the stupid part. They never update the script. Same lines, same tears, same big gesture on a Sunday afternoon. On loop, forever.

I know I should be doing better. There's nobody who will love you like I do. I knew this was the way it was going to be eventually. These lines are never new, they're tried and tested. They are delivered to the one person who hears them on repeat: you.

There's an expectation behind them, too. One that says, "I think this is going to work."

For a while, the narcissist is right; it does work. But it's never for long until the person receiving it all knows what's happening.

3 The moment their games (and time) is up

The narcissist knows their game is up the moment something shifts in you. You're the one in control of that, not them. They pull their usual move, the one that's worked a thousand times before, and you don't budge. You look, and think, "Hang on. I know this.

I've seen this. I've lived this."

It stings, but that sting feels familiar, and soon enough, you don't even know it as a sting; you know it as being completely exhausted. You know, I'm even going to say one other thing: You even know it as being boring. That's it, right there.

The narcissist's games, strategies, and hooks to keep you biting the bait have all gone; died just like that.

You stop crying at the argument. You stop chasing the apology. You just watch them perform, and you feel almost nothing. Sound familiar?

If you're starting to see the system, the system no longer works. And it is that instant, trust me.

It's a funny thing actually, because the best state of mind for a narcissist to feel in control is that of confusion, and there's nothing confusing about a person who is awakened to what's really been going on. They want you to cry and doubt yourself.

They want you to think that you're unlovable, or not strong enough. They want you to not apply for that job because you're not smart enough. But you are.

And that's why you're able to outsmart the narcissist and realize that their intelligence really only worked to a certain point, because all along, it was fake.

So as you're caring about the state of your relationship, the narcissist is wondering how long you'll keep giving them the benefit of the doubt. If they change nothing, they are able to get away with it all for as long as possible.

Take away that certainty, and the narcissist is left with nothing.

4 The narcissist had no idea you'd figure them out

Why would they? They're so self-involved that they wouldn't even fathom anyone figuring out that they're not actually smart at all. It hurts, but the narcissist believed you'd never catch on, and that's why they keep working that charm.

They thought you would always be this patient, this kind, this loving. They never once for a moment thought or assumed you'd see through them. Narcissists are stupid though, and that's how we've got here to this point, with me writing this, and you reading it.

It takes a special kind of arrogance to be this way, doesn't it? A special kind of person to be so egotistical that they thought all the tricks they've perfected would be perfect forever, but that's just not the case.

In the end, it's that very arrogance that exposes them, and how lazy they are about it all. They don't need to be careful if they don't need to be, but that's where they trip every single time.

You noticed it about them and refused to be the person who let it slide. The second you saw behind the narcissist's charm was that perfect moment for you.

And once you see it, you cannot unsee it. Every future move they make looks clumsy, obvious, almost cartoonish. Like watching a magician after someone showed you the trick.

No narcissist will be able to outsmart someone who has learned the script. That's what makes you the real winner all along.

5 Why the Same Trick Never Gets an Upgrade

Ask yourself why the narcissist doesn't adapt. Why not switch it up, try something fresh, come at you from a new angle now that the old one has flatlined? Because they can't.

Adapting requires actually studying the other person, and studying the other person requires caring about who that person actually is. Narcissists don't care. They care about what works, and once something works, they file it under "done" and stop thinking.

They're also incredibly lazy. Rewriting the playbook takes effort, and effort is for people who aren't already convinced they're the smartest one in the room. Why invent new tactics when the old ones snagged you the first ten times?

There's also the fear factor. Trying something new means it might fail, and failing means facing the truth that maybe they're not the mastermind they think they are. Safer to run the same tired routine and hope you fall for it again.

So they don't upgrade. They repeat. And repetition, on a person who's wide awake, is the loudest confession of all.

6 The Ego That Won't Let Them Quit

Ego is the reason a narcissist can't walk away, even when the game is clearly lost. Any normal person, when caught out and shown up, would reassess. Take a breath, feel a bit embarrassed, maybe change their approach. Not the narcissist.

Their ego won't let them admit they've been rumbled, because admitting it means facing something unbearable: that they were never as clever as they told themselves they were.

So they double down. They come back with the same tricks, louder this time, more desperate. They cannot afford to be seen as the one who lost, so they'd rather keep swinging at thin air than quietly bow out. That's ego doing all the driving.

And the stupid part? Everyone can see it. Friends, family, the person they're trying to manipulate. Everyone except them. The ego blocks the exit sign. They keep going because stopping would mean acknowledging you saw through them, and their whole sense of self can't survive that admission.

So they trap themselves. Round and round, forever.

A Narcissist does not heal or change. They start over with a new victim and do exactly the same thing.
