I want to crawl into your world a little bit, because I know the likelihood of you being smart is high, as you're here. You want to learn about narcissism, but before that you realized your intelligence was what led you here.
You started noticing patterns. You started questioning what didn't add up. That's not paranoia, that's a brain doing what a smart brain does. Sound familiar?
If you're this type of person, then you're also the kind of person the narcissist won't want to be around. There's no way to confuse you, or make you agreeable with them. The 10 signs that you're too smart for the narcissist to manipulate means you're intimidating.
Will the narcissist ever admit that? No way!

1 Around you, their story constantly changes
This isn't because they're not good at lying, it's just they're not very good at lying around you. They shift off balance, make mistakes, backtrack; they're certainly not as confident as usual.
That's down to the fact that they know you remember everything, so while they're busy spouting off all these falsities, you're there taking mental notes and calling them out when they slip up in front of you.
One week you were born in Denver, the next it was Chicago. One week they hate their sister, the next she's their best friend. You clock every inch of it.
People like this don't care who's listening or watching, they will call a narcissist out and revel in doing so. Connecting the dots this way makes any narcissist nervous, so they choose to steer clear of them through fear of being exposed.
2 When you talk, they talk louder
Any narcissist who knows you're smarter than them will often try to overtalk and out volume those very people. It's as if they're trying to make up for something they evidently lack, and they think talking more loudly will be the answer to that.
Narcissists here are also great at interrupting people mid-sentence, or redirecting the conversation so that it fits around a subject they like or are knowledgeable about. Don't be fooled here, this is nothing but panic, and the narcissist knows it.
They can't tell you at this point what they're feeling so they keep pretending.
I had a client tell me her ex would literally raise his voice mid-sentence the second she started explaining something, saying, "You don't know what you're talking about." Every single time.
Talking over you means they're drowning you out to try to overcompensate for you being too smart for them.
3 Mocking what you love? Check!
Don't be fooled into thinking any subject is off the table here, because a narcissist will take anything about you and mock it simply because they can.

The more they mock, the more smart you actually are, and this is the level of childishness a narcissist will resort to, to make themselves feel better. If someone comments about a book they read that the narcissist says isn't something they'd like, they can redirect it to you:
That sounds right up your street though, doesn't it?
And often the mocking hides jealousy. They wish they could sit still long enough to read a book, or care about something the way you do. They can't.
You'd love that, wouldn't you? It's passive aggressive, and there is the undertone of you being mocked for something they've openly said is boring. When a narcissist shrinks your interests, they're evidently trying to shrink you, too. Time to wake up.
4 They say you're 'too much'
You're always trying to overanalyze. Your problem is that you always overthink. Not everything has to be talked about like this, you know. There's no way you're too much for anyone, and I want you to remember that.
When they talk to you like this, a narcissist isn't telling you that you're too much in general, they're telling you in a way that you're too much for them.
Translation? "Please stop noticing what I'm doing." That's really what sits underneath the whole complaint. You're not too much, you're too accurate, and it's rattling them.

5 Your ideas become their ideas
Narcissists can't help but get you right where they want you when they claim your ideas to be theirs. I have been thinking the same for a while! Leave it with me! They repeat your thoughts, and turn them into their own without you being a part of it.
Infuriating to say the least, but this is what to expect from these kinds of people. It's a compliment, even though it'll never feel like one.
They took your great idea and wanted to claim it, which shows zero respect for you of course, but underneath it is someone rattled by your intelligence. They want to be like you, they are just toxic in how that comes across.
I had someone tell me their ex pitched their exact business plan back to them at dinner, word for word, and called it his brainwave over dessert.
6 They don't stop pushing
A narcissist who spots that you're getting smarter won't ever immediately give up on you. They might feel like the ground has shaken underneath them a little bit, but in general, they will push harder before they give up entirely. New ways to manipulate you will come into play.
I had a woman tell me her ex started sending long, tearful voice notes at 2am saying, "I'm getting help, I promise, just talk to me." Same script, louder volume.
They will try to get smarter than before so they can once again outsmart you and fool you into believing they care, or what they say is true.

Prepare for them to turn up their volume of abuse and keep you hooked, but if you've seen them for who they really are, there's the hope from me that you will also see this as a trick.
You've two choices; you can believe them and go back to the normal dynamics, or you can continue to be too smart for them and walk away once and for all.

7 You become their bone of contention
Everything else in their life feels okay but you, you are the one thing they cannot overcome. They can't figure you out, they can't get under your skin. With you, nothing seems to work, no matter how much effort the narcissist puts into breaking you down and making you suffer.
You're their bone of contention. In fact, I'd go as far to say that ever since they've known you, the narcissist has never been able to get you to fully comply with their abuse.
You disagree with them where you genuinely don't align, and you remember what happened without falling into the trap of believing their version. I'd say you are the type of person, if this is the case, who will never fall for the narcissist's tricks.
That might be because you've seen them in other people too many times before and now you spot them a mile away.
You've done the reading, you've lived the experience, and you can hear that fake sigh from three rooms away. The narcissist hates a student who did the homework.
8 The struggle around you becomes very real
It's that old age thing, isn't it? When the narcissist knows you're too smart for them, you feel that shift, and it isn't subtle. Many narcissists see you outsmarting them and needing to take a drastic course of action in order to preserve their dignity and image.
They do so by treating you like, well, shit. I'm sorry I can't be any less direct here, but this happens to so many people I can't even tell you.
The reason you're treated this way is because the narcissist feels as though they've got no other option other than to punish you for being too smart for their tactics.
They resent you for seeing through it all, and no matter what they do, say, or think, you're never going to be any different.
One woman told me her ex started introducing her as "the difficult one" at family gatherings. That was his way of pre-poisoning the room before she even said hello.
As a result, yes, you can struggle with the way they then choose to treat you. They don't want to involve you in events or occasions because your presence means they don't feel fully comfortable trying to manipulate others who are in attendance.
They feel your eyes on them the whole time, watching them and waiting to see when they slip up or start to cause trouble. For me, this is such an interesting dynamic, because a narcissist out of sorts is someone who is evidently uncomfortable.
What's not to love about witnessing that?!

9 They test you with tiny traps
Little baited hooks. That's what they throw at you when they suspect you've wised up. A small lie dropped into conversation to see if you correct it. A tiny piece of gossip about a friend to see if you bite and pass it along.
A vague accusation to check if you scramble to defend yourself.
They're watching. Closely.
I had someone tell me once that her ex would deliberately misremember something small, like where they'd had dinner two weeks ago, just to see if she'd cave and agree with his version. She stopped correcting him out loud, but she also stopped agreeing.
She'd just say, "Hmm, I remember it differently," and move on.
That drove him up the wall.
Because that's the thing about the tiny traps. If you don't fall in, they've got nothing to work with. No emotional footage to replay later. No slip to hold against you. No confused reaction to feed on.
And a narcissist without material is a narcissist scrambling. They keep laying the traps, sure. You just stop stepping in them.

10 Suddenly, they go quiet on you
There's a moment where the messages just stop. No follow up, no fake apology, no "can we talk?" Nothing.
It's eerie the first time, I get it. You're half expecting the next round, bracing for it, and then the silence stretches out and you start wondering if you did something wrong. You didn't.
When a narcissist realises their usual bag of tricks isn't landing, they go quiet to see if the silence itself will pull you back. It's a last resort. They're hoping you'll panic, reach out, apologise for nothing, fill in the gap they left.
Smart people don't. They let the silence sit. They notice it, register what it means, and get on with their day.
One woman told me she waited three weeks for her ex to break the silence, fully expecting some big speech. What came instead was a casual, "hey, been thinking about you." That was it.
She didn't reply, and honestly, that told her everything she needed to know about how little was really there.
