You will have people in your life who tell you to move on from the narcissist. They think wishing them well and stepping away will be the nice break you need, but it's not easy to forgive your abuser well, is it? Where's the peace in that?

For those wanting to get even with a narcissist, you don't want to wish them well or break their heart (the latter is impossible!)

Where it hurts most, is their pride. That is my subject of focus for today.

Pride is the thing they polish every morning before they even brush their teeth. Crack that, and you crack the whole performance they've been rehearsing for years.

Overview of how to break a narcissists pride

1 Pride is the narcissist's entire personality

Pride isn't something a narcissist has, it's something they are. It isn't a part of their personality, it's what everything else comes under; the umbrella that keeps them standing tall. Pride is the structure.

Everything revolves around it, from how the narcissist paints their image, to the status they put out into the world. It is an energy they insist on carrying into every room they enter because, for them, there's no alternative. If you take away a narcissist's pride, there's nothing left.

In fact, I'd say it's worse to do that than to actually break up with them. If you were to break their heart, a narcissist would be immediately handed a role that they can really sink their teeth into. How could they do this to me?

I loved them so much! I gave them everything they wanted! I don't know what I'm going to do without them. I tried to love them, they just wouldn't let me.

Victim mode is strong, and it will long continue if you give the narcissist permission to be the person everyone sympathizes with. It's attention, and a chance for people to say, "You're great. They don't know what they're missing. You deserve so much better."

They love playing the role of a wronged person, as people will naturally start to revolve around them in support, plus they get to paint you as the villain. If you break their pride, you've left nothing for the narcissist to fake. You've taken it all.

No script, no role, no sympathy chorus. Just a person standing there realising the audience got up and walked out mid sentence.

2 Let's see what that looks like

So, how do you break a narcissist's pride? Believe it or not, you don't even have to be direct about it; you can just live a life that will make them so envious of you. Number one; you can get that promotion at work.

If there's no promotion possible, you move jobs to one that really makes all your dreams come true. You were constantly told that you weren't smart enough for it, but the narcissist is proven wrong when you step into it and exceed all expectations even you had for yourself.

You laugh loudly in a room the narcissist is in. You're talking to a few people having a genuine conversation, and they are alone at the bar, looking over at you with that furrowed brow. You stop explaining yourself to people both you and the narcissist know.

You're over trying to look as though the relationship is something you're still healing from. At this point, it's just you living your best life, and the past is behind you. You're quiet, but that doesn't stop you from thriving in a way the narcissist hates.

That's where the crux of this topic lies:

You break a narcissist's pride by thriving, not crying. You are no longer the person who begs and pleads. You don't reach out to tell them how much they hurt you; you simply continue with a life they told you you'd never accomplish, and you do it well.

3 "You wouldn't last five minutes without me"

I use this phrase as a subheading because I think it's one that the majority of victims hear from the narcissist in their life the most. The idea that you're nothing without them is ludicrous. How can you not cope without their toxicity?

If anything, that's the very thing that will resuscitate your confidence and give you room to grow all over again. The narcissist wants to feed you phrases like this in the hope that they form some kind of prediction that will eventually come true.

It's their way of asserting power over you, and that power is removable, let me tell you. Thriving doesn't just mean you get to live well, it also means you're proving everything they said about you to be false.

That shows they are a liar, and all they wanted all along was to control your moods and limitations. Until, that is, you prove you have no limitations. It can be so strange for victims to stand in that space.

It feels like truly foreign land when you start achieving things you only ever dreamed of, that's where you might feel like you're an imposter in your own life, but I assure you, you are not.

You're living it the way you were always meant to before the narcissist came along and acted like a human roadblock to your path of success.

What actually breaks a narcissists pride

4 Even the narcissist gets stung sometimes

The narcissist's pride will crumble with ease the moment you are not just succeeding, but it's in the way you're so indifferent about it.

There's something a little painful about a person who brags, and I think if you've survived narcissistic abuse and you move on loudly, you will always appear as if you have something to prove.

You want your success to reach the narcissist, and you make a point of speaking up about everything you do that's good. That's a mistake to make. Stop wanting their reactions. Stop wanting to seek their approval. Stop checking to see if they've clicked on your social profile.

If you're doing this, you're still somewhat orbiting this person, and they will always have that last laugh. Let them sting by leaving them be. You do not need anybody in your life to always be checking in with, that's not down to you any more.

And why does checking sting them so much? Because it proves you've stopped waiting for their reaction. The show is over and nobody's watching from the front row.

The narcissist wants you to always need them, and even if you have left, you are still showing them that you need their attention or energy in order to feel good about yourself. Just do the things. Sign the documents. Get the job. Take the flight out to the city.

Meet friends. Buy an apartment. You don't have to do it while giving anything to the narcissist.

5 There is some good news you need to remember

I don't believe in being cold or cruel to the narcissist, not deep down. I don't think there is any other way to win than to be indifferent about them. This means you don't have to plot anything, or plan to destroy their reputation.

It's about choosing yourself, every single time. Choose what you want, and go out and get that version of yourself to the point where the narcissist is so irrelevant, they're just a distant memory to you.

This is the very thing that will eventually break a narcissist's pride, so hold back on any kind of confrontation. Be unbothered. Rebuild the life they started to break apart, and move ahead without their presence or influence. That is the best revenge.

6 The mask slips when nobody claps

A narcissist without an audience is a strange thing to watch. They rely on people clapping, nodding, gasping at the right moment, all of it. Take the audience away, and the whole act starts to wobble.

Think about it. Have you ever seen a narcissist tell a story to a room that isn't really listening? They get louder. They repeat the punchline. They look around, waiting for someone to give them what they came for.

When nothing comes back, that mask starts sliding right down their face.

You don't need to organise anything for this to happen. Life does it on its own. People get bored. New faces come in. The room stops caring about the same tired performance.

And when nobody is clapping, they can't keep the character alive. The charm drops. The eyes go flat. You get a glimpse of what's actually there, which is usually just a very tired person who forgot who they were underneath the show.

That silence does more damage than any argument ever could.

7 What their pride actually looks like from the inside

Behind the pride, there's a constant low hum of panic. The narcissist is always monitoring, always calculating who saw what, who might be thinking less of them, who might slip out of formation. It's exhausting to be them.

Pride from the inside isn't confidence, it's a security system that never turns off. Every conversation is a threat assessment. Every compliment they hear about somebody else lands like a small paper cut. Every time you smile without needing them, another little wire trips inside their head.

They don't sit in stillness, because stillness means the noise gets loud. So they scroll, they check, they text people they haven't spoken to in months, they start small dramas just to feel relevant again. That's pride from the inside.

Not a fortress, more like a person running around a burning house pretending it isn't on fire.

Once you understand that, you stop being afraid of the swagger. You see it for what it is. A very tired person, holding up a very heavy mask, hoping nobody notices their arms are shaking.
