A happy narcissist doesn't automatically mean a safe narcissist. Just because there seems to be less chaos doesn't mean you're forever granted that breathing room. As the narcissist is high on life, you'll notice a shift that isn't quite what's to be expected.

It feels unsettling, and that's because it is.

Their happiness always has a price attached, and someone in the room usually ends up paying it. Usually you. You just don't know it yet.

You won't be able to unsee that, and to explain further, I want to offer you ten things they do when they're happy that are quite frankly disturbing.

Overview infographic listing the disturbing things a narcissist does when they are happy, shown as small icons with short labels.

1 Happy? A narcissist?

There's a big difference between how you are happy, and how a narcissist is happy. Narcissists will prove to you that they're unhealthy in how they respond positively to what's going on around them, and this is about being able to spot that.

For you, a nice coffee every morning is enough to make you feel that gratitude. For the narcissist, they need power. They need to be in control, and they won't stop until they get it from somewhere.

I had a client describe her ex humming around the kitchen after he'd made her cry the night before. That was his happy. Her tears were the fuel.

They fuel their happiness because they can't just find it nice. It's this weird form of supply that lets them know everything is going their way, and all the while that's happening, there aren't any issues.

This is where, yes, they develop such disturbing behaviors that I want to talk about today.

2 Everything is cranked up

There's no such thing as quiet when it comes to the narcissist being happy. When they have a moment where they're feeling great, the volume is turned to max, and you're there witnessing it helplessly.

You'll hear every story coming from them that's louder than usual, and the way they laugh will cut right through you like a hot knife to butter. They also cut in conversations more regularly, too. Their opinions are widely known and made obvious, and they just cannot help themselves.

You don't really get a word in on a bad day, let alone these good ones where they have to be heard the most out of everyone in the room. You mean nothing to them when you're just the audience.

You have no choice in their eyes but to listen and tolerate.

And if you try to add something? You'll get a quick, "Anyway, as I was saying," and they steamroll right back over you like you never spoke.

3 Reckless behavior

If you've never experienced this, then boy do you have something big coming your way when you finally do. A happy narcissist loves to take risks. I mean big ones that leave a huge impression on everyone around them.

They want to be remembered as not just thinking big, but acting big, too. If there's something they have planned, they want everyone around them to match that excitement, and not ask a single question about it. I've already made plans. You're coming with me. Don't ask, just be there.

I want to do this with you. I can't wait! Oh, but you can. You really can. They didn't even check with you, but they booked it knowing it was what they wanted to do. This is the pattern, right? They never ask.

When they feel good, it's as if nothing will stop them from getting what they want. As usual, it comes at a cost to you.

The credit card takes the hit. Your calendar gets rearranged. Your sister's birthday? Missed. And when you say something, you're the boring one who ruined the whole vibe.

4 They brag, and they don't stop

Are you ready for this one? You can say yes, but I don't think you really are. Happy narcissists brag, and they do it in a way that can almost make the person listening feel worthless. I can't wait to go on our vacation this year!

We have so much planned! Our extension is the best thing we ever did! I'm earning so much money that it's so easy for me to spend and improve my home.

I don't know how I fit it all in, but I am up running every day at 5am, and that's before most people have even thought about opening their eyes.

And it goes on and on, until you're mentally checking the clock, wondering how one person can talk this much about themselves without pausing to breathe.

Good for you, honestly. You're amazing. You're perfect. That's what you want to hear as a narcissist, right? You nod along, but there isn't a part of you that's bothered.

5 Your boundaries are pushed on even more

That's the problem with any narcissist:

They love to push your boundaries to make you feel even more shitty about yourself. It's as if they're untouchable, and that's what they want to play on.

Your boundaries in response to all of that make them feel as though they're being met with these inconveniences that they'd rather not know about. A narcissist won't care though, and they'll do what it takes to trample over everything.

You say no phone calls after ten, they call at eleven. You say give me space, they show up at your door with flowers and a wounded look.

The contrast is stark; a good day sees them sulking. A bad day sees them riding high on the waves of pure happiness. You have to go along with it, and that feels like your only option. No wonder you feel so exhausted.

6 The 'love' they say they feel is even more

It's probably the one disturbing thing that feels the most confusing to you, the victim in all of this. You hear it all:

I couldn't have done this without you. You're the reason I could have the time to do it. You feel good for a little while, right? It's no wonder. You heard good things, and good things about yourself at that.

This is what you've wanted all along, and you're hearing it like music to your ears.

And then you catch yourself thinking, maybe they've changed, maybe this is who they really are underneath it all. That thought is the trap.

When the narcissist's happiness fades (and it always will), so will that warmth. This is a pattern you can't avoid, but hurt every time you experience it. Don't say I didn't warn you.

7 Spend, spend, spend

It's dangerous, isn't it? A happy narcissist wants to celebrate, and they are known to do that by going out and spending all their money, blowing it on the most ridiculous of things they don't even need.

From their next overpriced, extravagant vacation to that new car they really don't need to pay out for; a happy narcissist wants the world to know that they've got good things going on in their life.

What they own, and how they live is a reflection of that, and the more people who see it, the better.

It seems almost childish to me that a narcissist will do this much for attention, yet taking a large chunk out of their account to buy something that feeds their status is exactly the direction they'll go in.

Money is no object to them, and the more they have to show for it, the happier everyone will assume them to be.

And a client of mine once told me her ex maxed out a card on a designer watch the same week he refused to help with the electric bill.

8 Blaming you for not meeting their happiness? Yep!

Why aren't you happy? What's gotten into you? Why the long face? You're so miserable! My God, don't you ever smile? You hear it all, and I know, it's hard. It's hard to match someone's happiness levels when those very levels are built on such pretentious things.

They had a great day at work and come home in a fantastic mood, and they make it your issue that you're not immediately over the moon for them in a way they're satisfied with. You always have to bring my mood down. No, you don't.

You just find it hard riding their emotional rollercoaster, and it's hard to switch as quickly as they do.

Their happiness has a demand attached. Perform, mirror, cheer them on within seconds, or you're the villain who ruined a perfectly good moment they were having.

That's not your fault.

9 The Audience Must Grow

When a narcissist is happy, one person isn't enough. Two isn't either. They need eyes on them, and the more the better.

You'll notice they suddenly invite people over who haven't been round in months. They start posting more. They accept invitations they normally wouldn't touch. The dinner has to be at the busy restaurant, not the quiet one.

The trip has to be documented in real time, hour by hour, so everyone can see.

I've watched narcissists turn a simple bit of good news into a full blown campaign. New job? Now everyone must know, including that old colleague they haven't spoken to since 2019. Bought something nice? Time to invite the neighbours in for coffee they never wanted to make.

The happiness itself isn't the point. The audience is. Without people to witness it, the good feeling starts to leak out of them like a slow puncture. And so the circle has to widen, keep widening, keep feeding the thing.

It's exhausting to watch, and it never quite feels like celebration. It feels like recruitment.

10 Suddenly, Their Old Enemies Are Back

You'd think a happy narcissist would leave people alone. Nope. When they're riding high, they suddenly get very interested in the people they used to trash.

The ex they called toxic? Getting a friendly little "just thinking about you" text. The friend they cut off two years ago? Invited to coffee like nothing ever happened. The family member they refused to speak to at Christmas? Now getting tagged in old photos.

And why? Because when they're happy, they want witnesses. They want the people who saw the old, humiliated version of them to see the new, glowing one. It's a victory lap dressed up as an olive branch.

I've watched people fall for this, thinking, "Oh, they've grown, they want to make amends." No. They want to show off. The reconciliation lasts about as long as their good mood does, and once the shine wears off, those same people get discarded all over again.

Old enemies aren't forgiven. They're props for the current highlight reel.
