Hooray! You're on vacation, and you've waited for this for months. The sun is shining, the water is crystal clear, and your life feels peacefully still.
You might even just be spending a Saturday afternoon on the couch with a warm drink, and for that moment, it's ideal and it's what you needed. Your chest is not a ball of knots. Suddenly, the narcissist walks in, and everything changes within a split second.
That drop in your stomach, that flick of the switch from calm to braced, you know it before your brain catches up. Your body remembers what they do.
Today is about that.

1 Something happens in the room… something you notice
You're putting your feet up, and boy does it feel good. Life is stressful enough, right? We want to at least have some time where we can park our problems and responsibilities, and sit down with a blanket, a drink, or nothing but the peace and quiet that ensues.
During those moments, something changes in that room. Something shifts that you don't even have to open your eyes in order to know exists. Before the narcissist has even said a word, you're feeling that change in temperature. The narcissist has made everything cold, like they always do.
You look, and see them glaring right at you in a way where you immediately feel as though you've done something wrong. Look at you, all relaxed and living the life of luxury. It must be nice to not worry about anything while I'm working.
There's me all stressed about where you are, and you're here doing nothing. Oh right, so you're just sitting there, are you? Wow. Look at you. Not a care at all.
A person can easily go from zero to a hundred in the space of time it takes a narcissist to make that kind of comment. Your shoulders go right back up beside your ears, and you have tension in your body that you cannot ignore.
It's hardly fair, but as soon as you start to notice, there will be no way you'll be unable to notice what happens in that short space of time.
I had a client describe it as being caught doing something illegal. She was reading a book on her own sofa. That is the level of guilt they manufacture.
2 You have a peace about you that riles the narcissist
Peace? Try explaining the word peace to a narcissist and they will look at you like you're talking a foreign language they don't understand a word of. People need to be able to know this, as it is such an important part of why narcissists hate seeing you relax.

It's because they can't. They don't know your peace. They can try, but inevitably fail to get there all the time they do try. Any of these people want your constant time and energy, sapping it out of you like you're some kind of maple tree.
If you are wound-up and anxious, that's the kind of energy they crave the most, and it's the kind that is the easiest to control in their eyes.
If you're relaxed, you have to come a lot farther in order for them to rile you, which of course, they will do, but it takes far more effort. When you're in a calm state, you're clearer.
Your mind is able to filter the bullshit from the genuine, and the narcissist is aware of that. Not to mention the fact that you're less reactive than they want you to be. You are able to say no without twitching a single muscle. The narcissist cannot manage you.
They see you as a problem when you're in that zen state, and for them, that is why seeing you relaxed poses an actual threat to their ego.

3 There's no change, even when you're away on vacation
The same applies, rather sadly, for when you choose to go on vacation. You have made sure all the bags are packed, and you're ready to go. You've been looking forward to it for such a long time, and then you start to hear those familiar, abusive tones:
The hotel is not like they said it'd be online. Why would you not book a room with a sea view? Look at everyone having a way better time than us. Let me just make this clear:
None of this is about the hotel, or the specific room, or even the fact that everyone else is having fun. It's about you going somewhere nice, wanting to relax, and wanting to feel good about it.
Your feeling good alone triggers the narcissist to want to verbally attack you to get you to shift gears. The crisis becomes something external so that you can pander to their needs, but you see it as wanting to fix their latest problem for a slice of approval in response.
What happened to relaxing?! There you are, that anxious ball you've been desperate to have a vacation from.
New location, same nervous system. You changed the scenery, but you brought the source of the tension with you in the seat next to you on the plane.

4 You're constantly disturbed, by design
Narcissists aren't bad at relaxing due to their stressful nature. They aren't overworked any more than you or I. What they are, is good at wanting to disturb your pace on purpose because it, well, disturbs your peace.
They don't care to explain, or even know how to explain why they do it, but their instinct is to cut through your peace regularly enough for you to have a constant disturbance to your peace so that, by design, you learn to dread and fear peace itself.
How disgusting is that? It would explain to you why you can't relax even though there are no threats, and why there's nothing happening to you that is visible enough for you to explain it.
When you're calm, you show the narcissist how independent you are, and again, we're looking at someone who cannot stand that in any way. They then poke you. They want to prod away every part of you that is content.
They start an argument over nothing, knowing it will get you fired up and on edge when you needn't be. The loud sigh. The one trigger you have that they know they can hook you and win with.
And there you are, before you know it, fighting for something we all have a right to: peace. For the narcissist, this works every single time, and trust me, I wish I could wave a magic wand and make that not be the case.
Sound familiar? That moment where you were nearly relaxed, and then a comment lands, and suddenly you are defending yourself over nothing at all.
5 "Just give me this short time."
Just ten minutes so I can sit down and enjoy this coffee! Just a few days so I can enjoy a short break from work! Nope. Not going to happen. You might ask for it out loud, or wish for it inside, either way, neither will make a difference. What?
I'm not doing anything. You're so uptight. Here you are, imagining things again. You have a right to sit at a coffee shop in the city square on your trip without having to explain yourself or why you want to.
For the narcissist, your peace was never supposed to be yours.
It was always supposed to be theirs to grant, theirs to interrupt, theirs to decide you had enough of. Ten minutes without permission feels like a rebellion to them.

6 You are allowed this vacation
I'm here to advocate for that! Not only that, but I want to remind you that you're allowed nice things. You are allowed to feel okay and relaxed. You should be able to switch off when you want to.

Being treated this way isn't going to help you in the long run, and so let them hate you, let them be toxic away from you.
You do not owe anyone a tense shoulder or a rushed coffee. Rest is not a luxury you need to earn back through good behaviour. It is just yours.
7 The moment you get home, they punish you for it
You've had a lovely time. The suitcase isn't even unpacked yet, and already the mood has shifted. The narcissist has been quiet the entire journey back, and now that you're through the door, it starts. Little jabs about the mess you left before you went.
A sudden problem with a bill. The look. That look that tells you the holiday version of you is no longer welcome here.
Why do they do this? Because they resented every second of your peace, and now they get to collect the debt. You were allowed a few days of light, and now they're balancing the books.
You'll notice the tan feels like it fades faster than it should. The photos on your phone start to feel like they belong to a different person. Within 48 hours, you can barely remember what it felt like to breathe properly on that balcony.
That is deliberate. They cannot let the good feeling live inside you, so they set about dismantling it the second the front door closes.

See also The Narcissist Gets Sick on Day Two of Your Vacation, and It's Never Random8 Why your laugh with someone else sets them off
Your laugh, when it belongs to someone else, is unbearable to them. Think about that for a second. A genuine laugh, the kind that comes out before you can stop it, at something a friend said, or a stranger at the bar, or your sister on the phone.
That laugh tells the narcissist you have joy that they didn't hand you and can't take away.
They watch you light up and something twists in them. Who made you laugh like that? What was so funny? You never laugh like that with me. And just like that, the laugh dies in your throat. You feel yourself downshifting, softening your face, pulling the joy back in.
Because joy, when it comes from somewhere outside them, is proof that you don't need them to feel good. That's the real crime. Not the laugh itself, but who caused it. They wanted to be the only source.
Watching someone else spark that in you is a small, ordinary betrayal in their eyes, and they will make you pay for it later.
