When you know how to be alone with yourself well enough, there is a particular kind of quiet that can roll over your skin. It's not that you're lonely, it's that you're able to hear the truth in the air of the silence you're sitting in.

A narcissist needs you to react to everything they do, and when you choose the quiet, you choose to confuse them, and show them that their game isn't working on you any more. When you stop needing, they start fearing. That's when the narcissist looks their smallest.

And it's a strange thing to watch, someone who once towered over your whole life suddenly looking like a kid who lost his audience.

1 The pain the narcissist wanted you to feel that is absent

Empaths who have been able to master being alone and living and loving that solitude have a power that no person, narcissist or not, can overturn. Usually, a narcissist will go cold and instant at some point. They don't care how it affects you, just how they're being perceived.

They love to induce panic and worry, wondering who will chase them. They wait for you to do that very thing, and the narcissist hits back, slowly yet surely, with:

Yeah. I've been kinda busy. Sorry about that. Like it means nothing, right? Only it means something to those people who have been waiting. An empath? Nope. Nothing similar, even remotely. They've grown so used to their own company that a narcissist's silence is actually quite nice to them.

They think, "Nice, I get a little time to finish this book I've been reading."

Panic? There's nothing close to it. There aren't those texts that read anxiously, "Did I do something wrong?" "How can I make it better?" "I am so sorry."

The silence is weaponized, and the empath isn't interested.

I had a client tell me she read three chapters, made tea, and only remembered halfway through the second cup that he was supposed to be punishing her.

2 Tired? That's because you're watching these weird games

When I say you've seen it all before, I kid you not. It's the victim's experience to be kept stuck watching the narcissist flirt with other people, or pull back just to chase them.

They also make sure they regularly mention other people's names you know you don't know, so you are kept on your toes. Off balance. You get to the point where you've heard all of this before, and nothing, I mean nothing moves you.

You sit there quietly for many evenings wondering who you actually are, but moving on from that and really figuring it out. It feels good. You start to see the patterns emerging, and realizing quite what you've been stuck in all this time.

You know what the narcissist is trying to do, and it isn't going over your head any longer. People grow so tired because they've had enough, and they're no longer willing to participate in whatever the narcissist next has in store.

The kind of tiredness I'm talking about is the kind that doesn't just make you feel like you didn't sleep well the night before. It's the kind that makes you feel like you can't think straight, even when you do sleep well.

The problem is that you've been drained of all your light, energy and joy for all this time, and you can't live a normal, functioning life without any of that. Empaths are aware of this, and love to be able to recharge with the knowledge that they're worth it.

Even more importantly, that the narcissist isn't worth it.

Because once you've seen the same trick pulled fifteen different ways, it stops being clever. It just looks tired. Sad, really.

3 When you're alone, you learn everything the narcissist tried to keep from you

Some people aren't a fan of being alone, and I can understand why if you don't fully know how to utilize it properly.

It takes a lot to be comfortable being alone, but when you can do that, you will notice your nervous system thanking you for it, as it learns to stop treating other people like they're essential oxygen that you need. You don't.

Empaths know this, and that's a big part of learning everything about narcissists that you didn't know before. When you stop being around them, you start to find your worth again. Your mood starts to regulate, and it feels good.

You find your worth, just when you thought you'd never see or feel it again. You feel safe, knowing that everything they said about you being alone and suffering was wrong.

Narcissists are so scared of you getting to this point, as they rely on you being small and scared to stick around and need them for more and more things. Without that happening, they are playing a game they know they're losing. Your solitude will break that into tiny pieces.

Slowly, day by day, you come to realize that you should never have been chasing them at all; you should've been chasing peace.

Peace doesn't text you back with a cold, one word reply. Peace doesn't leave you rehearsing apologies in the shower. Peace just stays.

4 And here it comes… "You've changed"

Switching to and becoming someone the narcissist never expected you to be will be noticed by them right away. You've changed. Something about you is different. What's with you? You didn't used to be this way. It's like you're a stranger. I don't even know you any more.

See how all those examples make it out like it's your fault? Why would that be? Simply because the narcissist wants you to feel guilty for growing and being okay with being alone.

You aren't scared of it, which means you're learning to not let fear creep in and take over your life. You also did something very uncomfortable to them; you quietly made being alone your superpower.

You didn't falter, you didn't ask them for help, you didn't tell them this was what you were planning on doing. You sat alone, thought it through, and made it your mission to be someone the narcissist could no longer play any game with.

The version you were before all of this shifting was far more manageable for the narcissist. They knew you and could predict you. You used to flinch, and now you're free. You used to change your plans at the narcissist's demand.

Now you do what you want without fear of what they will say, or how they will try to make you feel.

Sound familiar? That quiet moment where you realise you didn't check your phone once today, and nothing bad happened because of it.

You're proud of who you've become, and that's something the narcissist will never be able to argue with. Nothing works from here on out. The games you have been tied up with just turn into useless wishes the narcissist has. I wish you would make your move.

I wish you'd fall for my lies. But nothing.

5 The games that no longer rile you

Don't think for one second that a narcissist will stop playing their games with you, just because you've been able to master being alone and being comfortable with it. They will keep going, because their ego will not allow them to quit. Notice how the change affects them.

Some love-bomb, others ignore you to try to make you feel guilty. The hot and cold makes a quick return because it's all they know how to do. Meanwhile, you quietly exist and you're okay with that.

You aren't remotely tempted to jump in and try to join them back where they are because it's of no interest to you. Trust me, there is nothing wrong with you.

The games only work when someone's playing along. Sit them out long enough and they start to look like a person shouting into an empty room.

6 Why solitude terrifies them more than it ever did you

Their whole identity is built in a room full of people. Strip the room away and there's almost nothing left of them, and they know it. That's what makes solitude such a threat to a narcissist. It isn't just quiet time to them.

It's a mirror they can't angle away from.

You, on the other hand, sat with yourself long enough to actually like the company. They can't do that. The moment they're alone, their own thoughts start whispering things they've spent years drowning out with noise, drama, and other people's attention.

So they scroll, they text, they line up the next person, they pick a fight, anything to avoid being still.

And here's what really twists the knife for them. You did the very thing they cannot do. You proved solitude wasn't a punishment. You made it a resource. Every hour you spend content on your own is another hour they spend restless, wondering why their own company feels unbearable.

That's why they push so hard for a reaction. Silence, for them, is not peaceful. It's exposing.

7 The hoover attempt that lands with a thud

So here it comes, right on cue. The message you knew would land eventually. Maybe it's the "hey stranger" text at 11pm, or the long apology that reads like it was written by someone else entirely. Perhaps a birthday message six months late.

Maybe even flowers at your door with a card that says something vague and sweet.

And you look at it. You really look at it. And you feel absolutely nothing.

There's no flutter. No pull. No little voice in your head saying, "Maybe this time they mean it." The hoover was designed to land in soft, waiting soil, and instead it hits concrete. It just sits there, small and slightly embarrassing, on the pavement of your life.

You don't reply straight away. Some empaths don't reply at all. You go about your day, make dinner, do the washing up, and by the time you remember the message exists, it's already lost whatever power it was meant to have.

That's when the narcissist knows their best move wasn't even a move.

Being alone is dangerous… it's addicting. Once you see how peaceful it is, you don't want to deal with drama and toxic people.
