Hard to believe that a narcissist wants to copy you when they spend so much of their time trying to show you how much they hate you, right?

The truth is, all narcissists will watch their victims closely. In that time, they are subtle and draw their attention to all the little things you say and do.

They’re taking notes, and they mean business.

If you ever noticed it, this would be the kind of act that would make your skin crawl.

Because you don’t see it, the narcissist gets away with it.

Until now, that is…

Overview of how a narcissist copies your identity

1That’s right: copying you

No narcissist can resist copying other people. You have to understand that these are the kinds of people who don’t know how to build a genuine, authentic character. They much prefer to steal from you, their friends, relatives, coworkers, even strangers in the street.

A narcissist wants what you have, from your energy to the qualities you carry with you. If you light up a room, they want a piece of it. If people trust you without even thinking about it, they want to be able to be that sort of person, too.

For those who aren’t narcissists, they’re happy with being enough and not needing to carve out this perfect identity they can sell to everyone else and it drives all narcissists totally crazy.

Little by little, bit by bit, the narcissist will steal it from you, copying everything you are, everything you say, and everything you do.

If they envy you, a narcissist will take those parts of you and wear them like they own them. This is why they frequently steal ideas or take recognition for what you do.

There’s always something a narcissist can and will copy from you; it’s just a question of noticing what they’re doing.

2That looks like this

Checklist of the everyday ways a narcissist copies you

I want you to think about a hobby or interest you may have recently started to take up. Perhaps it’s running, for example.

Two weeks after you start doing it, the narcissist is on all their social media accounts posting their new running route online for everyone to see. They’ve gotten themselves into a nice little routine, and doing far ‘better’ and longer runs than you, according to them.

The same goes for a new book you’ve started to read because you genuinely enjoy reading. The narcissist will post and tell everyone that they’re reading the same book, and that they finished it before you. Don’t even be surprised if they drop the ending too, by ‘mistake’, never put anything past these people.

If you were to even start picking out an individual style for yourself; the narcissist will want it for themselves. Whether it’s a phrase, a way you tell a story, a type of humor that they see others find endearing in you, they’ll take it and use it for themselves.

The fact is, what you like and enjoy fill you with confidence, and they make you that warm-hearted person everyone loves to be around. A narcissist will want a huge slice of that for themselves, and they will take it and own it like it didn’t even ever belong to you.

3Directly to your face? You bet!

Oh, trust me; a narcissist is never subtle about anything if you stand back and look at the bigger picture. They want you to notice, but they don’t want you to say anything when you do. This is all they need to know they’ve riled you, but are the ones still in control.

“I love this sort of thing!”

“Do you remember me introducing it to you?”

No, you don’t, but this is a classic attempt to get praise because their sad little lives depend on feeling good, and people thinking good things about them every single passing day.

I like to say, “Just be you. Just be happy. Just be enough.”

Narcissists can’t though; how could they possibly think they’re enough when deep down they detest themselves so much?

That’s the real reason why they steal from you and copy you the way they do; they so desperately want to be someone else.

The problem comes when a narcissist tries to convince their victim that they didn’t think of or come up with the thing they’re copying first. It’s a form of gaslighting, and is a way for the victim to feel confused and doubt themselves, which is exactly what the narcissist actually wants.

Your memory isn’t off, trust me.

4Here’s the why

Tell me this:

Why would anybody who thinks they’re genuinely the best thing ever want to copy anyone else?

Hits you hard, doesn’t it? I always feel like that question is like a lightbulb switching on.

Of course, nobody who is truly happy with who they are would feel any need whatsoever to copy another person.

People who are insecure and uncertain of themselves? People who really don’t like who they are? They’ll copy anyone and everything just to try and be like everyone else.

Underneath their bravado, a narcissist feels totally hollow. If they see you’ve got a real trait about yourself, they know they won’t be able to create it for themselves, and so it’s easier to just take what is yours and make it their own.

They feel energised when they know they’re fabricating a real depth and warmth about themselves, and if they can’t build what it is, they’ll borrow it (and never return it) from you.

Don’t be flattered by it; the narcissist isn’t admiring you. They’re simply envying you and not wanting you to have it.

5You never saw it coming

It feels nice to be copied when you don’t see the toxic undertones as to why you’re being copied. Feeling close with someone whom you ‘have everything in common with’ can bring a person more connected to the other, but believe me, that will only feel the case on your end.

For the narcissist, they just did what they had to do in order to take from you what’s yours and copy you.

The studying of you comes as the narcissist is figuring out what parts of you they want to carve into their own identity, and being close to you was the cover they needed in order to make that happen.

6The wool will never be pulled over your eyes again

Please don’t let it! It’s your choice now to start paying close attention, and when you do, you’ll start seeing it everywhere you go.

You have a hobby, so do they.

You like a band, so do they.

It all comes back to you, who you are, and what the narcissist likes to believe they started first.

The problem occurs when you think it’s just coincidence and believe that you are so alike, you’re not. The narcissist is only doing this so they can make you think you have everything in common.

Again, we are hitting strong manipulation here, so don’t miss it.
