I think it's certain we all know how much a narcissist loves a crowd, fully thriving wherever people gather and can form some kind of audience. It's that spotlight, isn't it? They want to be in the center, even if those people don't know them yet.

Believe it or not though, there are places the narcissist walks into and immediately feel as though they want to turn around and leave.

There are no bad places, there are just threats to the narcissists, and today I will talk about five of them.

Icons of five places a narcissist dreads walking into

1 The office for the therapist

What a way to start the list! I cannot tell you how much a narcissist hates therapy offices, but let me try to give you some kind of idea...

The narcissist will physically want to run if they get even slightly close to sitting in that chair and being judged in any way by a professional.

Think of it this way, if the therapist is good, they won't be charmed by anybody. There's no room or time to be dazzled, and so they sit and discover the truth pretty quickly. Imagine them being asked how something made them feel, and the narcissist already knowing that no answer will fool the therapist.

They're stuck!

The therapist will have seen all kinds of attitudes and personalities walk through their door, so they've seen literally everything before. That's bad news for the narcissist who will try to wriggle out of seeing a therapist by saying things like, "Therapists are such a waste of money." "They don't even know what they're talking about." "I don't need to pay someone to tell me about who I am or what I like because I already know."

Yeah, yeah. We've heard it all before, haven't we? The entire concept of psychology or therapy will be totally trashed by them. Can you believe these are the kinds of people who think they're bigger than the mind itself? It's laughable!

The truth is, the narcissist doesn't want to sit in a room where someone is able to hold a mirror up to them and show them who they really are.

2 The room where nobody cares about them

No entitled brat of a narcissist wants to stand in a room where they don't feel important, do they? Every room they enter has to be filled with admiring people, crawling and hovering around them in some way with their endless amounts of attention.

Where you get tight communities, a narcissist hates walking into them if they don't know anybody, or are unable to play a key role in that moment. A family gathering where they aren't the main focal point, or one that isn't their own, for example, is their worst nightmare.

These are the places the narcissist will walk into and nobody will rush over to greet them, or feed them with compliments. For the narcissist, this is horrific, and they feel just like everybody else; far from their ideal.

Soon enough, a narcissist will become restless in situations such as this, and they will make a point of letting everybody know about it. The sighs, the checking of their phones or watch, or even making some lame excuse to leave early because they can't stand it a minute longer are all typical ways they react.

The truth is, there are droves of places that a narcissist will go where nobody seemingly cares if they're there or not, and that hits a raw nerve for the narcissist. They would sooner remove themselves than blend in with a crowd because it doesn't suit their ego to stay.

Imagine being somewhere and knowing that you can't just be present. I think it's very telling when someone walks away because they're uncomfortable just mixing with people rather than dominating that space.

3 The place wherever accountability can double down

Seeing as a narcissist is a great fan of dodging accountability like it were a baseball heading for a home run, any type of environment where there is some kind of trail to responsibility is one of their worst places to be.

They hate walking into a situation, room, meeting, dynamic, family, workplace; wherever it is, where they can be held up for doing something that wasn't ideal, or turned out to be a mistake.

If a mistake can be tracked or documented, the narcissist doesn't want to be a part of it, but you know sometimes, they have to be. Still, it can induce more denial:

"I don't know what you're talking about."

"I was told to do it this way."

"Nobody told me that this was wrong."

"The system is broken, it's not me."

"If I had my way, I'd be changing these archaic rules."

For the narcissist, even a great big folder of evidence isn't enough for them to be blamed for something they absolutely did, yet it sits there, offering the truth to people who can direct the blame back to them.

They know that, too, by the way. They know they mess up, and as much as they try to be perfect, that messing up will be the battle they will take on if it means any chance of looking innocent at the end of it.

Rooms like this make them still want to disappear, though. If they can help it, they dodge them constantly.

4 Any kind of circle of support

Empathy is the main currency at these kinds of places, and the narcissist hates that. If they're entering a space such as a grieving circle or a support group, you can bet the narcissist is going to immediately feel the discomfort of being around those who are talking about their own pain or vulnerabilities.

Even more interestingly, this is the type of place where the narcissist cannot claim to be the sole victim, which riles them like nothing else. They want as many moments as possible to be about them and nobody else, so sitting amongst others going through hard times is less than ideal for them.

Nobody wins in these rooms. Nobody is impressed by a person's status because they've got too much else on their minds. They don't care about success, they just care about getting through each day, one at a time.

A narcissist therefore, cannot perform to those who are already majorly preoccupied with their own misfortunes.

On the way home, you know they will label their meeting or time in one of these rooms as depressive because that's how it'll make them feel, rather than empathetic, or compassionate.

5 Wherever you are thriving

Finally, you're at this place in your life! You've gone from barely getting by to thriving, and you've earned your way there fully.

Maybe it's your birthday, and you're throwing a party for the people you love to join you in celebrating. You got a promotion at work, and you're out having dinner with the narcissist.

These are all places the narcissist would rather shrivel up and disappear than spend with you a moment longer.

Why?

They don't want to feel the warmth of your success, they want it all to be theirs instead. They hate that you're glowing and shining, and they hate that they have nothing to do with the reason why.

They will get a headache, or backache; anything to worm their way out of another minute in your glory, because it isn't theirs.
