The worst thing that is described by victims of narcissistic abuse is the way they strut around like they win at everything. They've got a big smirk on their face, and an air of arrogance that you just want to break to pieces.

When a narcissist gets a taste of their own medicine, that smirk quickly fades, and there are 11 signs you want to look out for to ensure that they are getting their comeuppance. Life makes them pay, and these are how, and why.

And I have to tell you, watching it happen is oddly satisfying. Not in a cruel way. More like finally seeing a wobbly table get the shim it always needed.

Overview infographic listing the eleven signs a narcissist is getting a taste of their own medicine, shown as small icons with short labels.

1 As they lose people, the narcissist acts as if they were in control of it

I didn't need them anyway. It's like the trash is taking itself out! I cut them off. They were a waste of my precious time. Yeah, right. And pigs fly, too, right? The narcissist's inner world shrinks. Family and friends fall away. They don't call any more.

They keep their distance. What's the story, I hear you ask. Well, you'll hear the above and more from the narcissist, who insists that the reason is down to them deciding to cut them out, and not the other way around.

The truth is, nobody is knocking on their door and that is exactly how it feels to be alone without nobody around you to count on.

They see through the narcissist, and eventually that has to show the world that this is a consequence of how badly the narcissist treated these people over time.

I had a client tell me her mother lost her sister, her neighbours, even the hairdresser she'd been with for twenty years. Her line? "I outgrew them." Sure.

Life will do the work for you if you just let it be and allow yourself to be patient.

2 The new relationships with behind-the-scenes cracks

The narcissist will never change. They like to think they're always evolving and improving, but the truth is, they will never learn, and never grow. When they get a new relationship after being with you, you'll think it's only a matter of time before that shows cracks, too.

You're not wrong in anticipating this. The narcissist will flaunt it, but behind the scenes, it's already going wrong. There will be the same hot and cold as existed with you, as will be the same obsession with controlling the dynamics, everything you do, and what you think about yourself.

The new partner is probably already hearing, "You're being dramatic," or, "My ex used to do the same thing." Same script, different actor reading the lines.

The narcissist also knows that somewhere along the line there will be an almighty crash that will send this new relationship in exactly the same place you ended up. Pity for them, not.

3 Health that's taking a hit

Health takes a hit from carrying all those deceiving traits. The rage, the emptiness; it all has to manifest somewhere, right? Narcissists feel it. They have trouble sleeping, they have this tension that lives in their body. They stress a lot.

Never believe them when they say they're fine, because really they're carrying the weight of the world on their toxic shoulders.

The headaches, the gut issues, the mystery ailments that keep sending them to specialists. Their body is telling on them, even when their mouth won't.

4 No way of relaxing

No narcissist truly knows how to relax. Even when they're on vacation, laying on some sandy beach somewhere, they're still on guard. These are paranoid people, and when they aren't paranoid, they're plotting. That's why they are never able to switch off and enjoy life; because they can't.

It's a quiet punishment that few people spot or even think about, but trust me, it's there, and it pains them every single day.

A client once told me her ex would wake up at 3am scrolling through his phone, checking who liked what, who said what. He couldn't rest. Not ever.

Imagine being so toxic that you're always watching your back, or thinking of ways to ruin another person's life?

5 Loneliness, without the name attached to it

Loneliness is the ultimate Karma for the narcissist. They spent their entire time knowing you, making you feel small, isolated and alone, and eventually this is what happens to them. In that loneliness they think, "What did I do so wrong?

I can't understand why people don't want to see me."

They do. They know exactly what the issue is. Here you have a person who never learned or wanted to connect with anyone, and now they've hit the timeline that tells them they're on their own.

And there's no partner to blame, no scapegoat to point at, no audience to perform for. Just them and the silence they built with their own two hands.

Good, I say!

6 Bitter lies equals a bitter life

A narcissist may revel in the lies they tell at any given moment, but all lies revolve around being bitter, and all bitterness will eventually rot the person carrying it all.

That's my main thought when it comes to narcissists; they expect to put out into the world whatever they want to, no matter who it hurts or destroys. The fact is, each lie they tell is a bitter reflection of the person they are.

Their own medicine is when they've built up so much of that sour taste within their own body that they literally feel it; they ooze it. Their own medicine is tasting what that dishonesty has done to them for all those years.

And you can see it on their face. The tight jaw, the twitchy little smile, the eyes that never quite settle. Bitterness has a look, and they're wearing it.

7 Exposing their behavior for everyone to see

Toxic people eventually expose themselves. Don't think any of them are exempt from it, because none of them get away with being that cruel and unkind their whole lives without some form of punishment.

As soon as that behavior is out there for people to see, those very people will treat them differently. I know that's been me over time; I don't want to give my time or energy to a narcissist who is intent on causing me problems.

I certainly learn to not trust them with things because I've learned they aren't entitled to them. I see narcissistic people for who they are, and I distance myself from anyone who thinks drama is exciting. I don't want to be friends with them.

So the narcissist loses people as soon as they reveal who they are, and that's just the way the cookie crumbles.

And once one person walks, another notices. Then another. Suddenly the narcissist is standing in a room they used to fill, wondering where everybody went.

Sadly for them, that's not my problem.

8 People's strength to fight back

In case you didn't know, here's a little fact for you:

Narcissists hate it when you fight back. They carry with them this air of entitlement; like everything they do has a good reason for being done. If they're ever wanting to cause trouble, they hate it when you fight back properly.

I don't mean scream and cry and yell; they actually love that. I mean really fight. Hand over evidence. Report them. Contest them properly. Use your strength to build a case against them they cannot deny exists.

And watch them squirm when you calmly say, "I have the messages, I have the dates, I have the receipts." No shouting needed. Just facts they can't wriggle out of.

If you know how to fight a narcissist properly, you will win. Seeing as these kinds of people love to win all the time, losing is something they struggle with. If that's you, you're finally giving them that bitter taste of their own medicine.

9 Losing it all? Absolutely

Ever since you've known the narcissist, you've felt your life slip through your fingers. You've lost it all; bit by bit, and as you've eroded, the narcissist has built in strength and supply. What if you just stopped.

What if you gave them your indifference on a plate, handed to them like it was dinner? When a narcissist starts to lose it all, they finally get a taste of what you've been going through this whole time.

They feel their world slipping through their fingers, and they know there's nothing they can do about it other than panic and try to implement damage control. They love-bomb you, punish you, make promises; whatever it takes to get you to comply and feel their intimidation once more.

Only that's not you now. You're giving them back what they gave to you, and that is a dish best served cold.

And watch them scramble. Watch them call, text, show up, try every old trick. None of it lands. That silence you're giving them? It's deafening for someone who fed on your reactions.

10 The mirror they can't stand to look in

There comes a point where the narcissist catches sight of themselves, properly, for the first time in years. Maybe it's a photograph they weren't ready for. Maybe it's the way their voice sounded on a voicemail they accidentally listened back to.

Maybe it's a comment someone made that landed just a bit too close.

And they hate it.

They've spent so long crafting this outward version of themselves, all polish and charm, that when the real reflection creeps in, they can't cope with it.

You'll see them start avoiding certain conversations. Avoiding certain people. Avoiding rooms with too many mirrors, metaphorical or otherwise. Even a simple question like, "Are you okay?" can send them spiralling because they don't want anyone looking too closely.

Deep down, they know. They've always known. They just spent years outrunning it.

And now the running is catching up with them, and their reflection is right there waiting every time they turn around. That's a special kind of medicine, and they're finally swallowing a big spoonful of it.

11 Younger people not buying the act

There's something particularly satisfying about watching a narcissist try their old tricks on somebody in their twenties and get absolutely nowhere.

The younger crowd has grown up with therapy talk, mental health language, boundaries as a normal concept. They've heard the word gaslighting since they were teenagers.

So when the narcissist rolls out the guilt trip, the sob story, the sudden mood shift, the younger person just tilts their head and says, "Yeah, that's manipulation, I'm not doing this."

No fight. No debate. Just a flat refusal to play.

And the narcissist doesn't know what to do with that. They're used to people arguing back, defending themselves, getting tangled up trying to explain. A simple "no thanks" with zero emotion attached? It short circuits them.

I've watched narcissists try to call younger family members "disrespectful" for setting normal boundaries, and it just doesn't land the way it used to. The kids shrug. They walk off. They text somebody about it and move on with their day.

The act has an expiry date, and it's been reached.
