If you think leaving the narcissist is going to make them sweat, you're not even considering what would scare them the most. Confronting them makes them a little jumpy, but I want to focus on what happens when you compare notes with other people the narcissist has lied to.

You got it: the narcissist quivers in their boots, and that's not something their ego is proud of. They think everything is fine until you blow their house of cards down with just one conversation with someone else who knows what you've been through.

One coffee, one honest chat, and years of their careful storytelling starts to unravel. That's why they work so hard to keep everyone in separate lanes.

1 The narcissist is aware what they've done

I want to tell you how careful narcissists are. They are such fussy people even, and so every time you tell a lie, that lie has been edited to suit the narcissist. There is a version you give them, and a version they like to go along with.

This means they can always give other people their version in replacement of yours if it means they get to benefit from it. Someone might ask what went on during a specific moment, and the narcissist is ready with replies such as:

She started it. I just wanted to defend myself. I need to say that I've never been supported by him, it didn't matter what I did. God it was pretty much over between us anyway before I even found that person.

The same narcissist will have all these excuses up their sleeves, and that will be a puzzle that everyone they know only has a small part of. Apart, the puzzle doesn't make any sense.

People just get on with their day and don't realize they all hold clues that when placed together, they find out the truth about this person. Then you get even just a few of them together to compare notes, and suddenly, the picture starts forming.

That's why narcissists like to keep people apart, so none of the puzzle gets a chance to form!

I had a client sit down with her ex's sister for the first time in years, and within twenty minutes they realised they'd been fed opposite versions of the same story.

2 Don't expect them to control this

Narcissists are able (and very good) at controlling the story they tell you. They're equally as good at controlling whatever story they have for your friends, your relatives, their own family, and who they work with.

Remember, these are people who invented the script, so memorizing it is going to be no problem. Except… There is a problem. People talk, and nobody can keep everyone apart all of the time.

That means eventually, yes, the people who know the narcissist will bump into each other and start chatting. Eventually, that chat will lead back to the narcissist, and that is their absolute worst nightmare.

I know victims who know the type of person a narcissist is would probably assume the narcissist hates screaming, or shouting, or those dramatic confrontations that leave them exposed. You're wrong.

It's two people who've been subjected to narcissistic abuse meeting, sitting down having a coffee together, and quietly comparing what they've been through and what they've each been told. Hold on a minute, I was told something totally different. That happened to you, too? So, they were lying all along?

Right there is the moment two pieces of the puzzle collide, and you look and can start seeing what the entire puzzle really looks like. You both recognize the pattern, and you have each other to speak to about it.

The narcissist's worst fear has just become unlocked, thanks to two people who are now on a mission to take the narcissist down.

Quiet coffee, quiet questions, quiet dawning realisation. No shouting needed. Just two people slowly matching dates and phrases and going, hang on a second.

3 Keeping you isolated: the narcissist's grand scheme

That's exactly what the narcissist wants to do. Isolation is a tool they use so that nobody gets the opportunity to talk to each other. These people do it in a way that's so clever, you won't even notice they're doing it. Stay away from her.

I don't want you to see them again. Block them on your phone. Ignore them if they call or if you see them in the street. It won't be this direct, it never is. Instead, it will be:

I think they're just jealous people. We don't need that in our lives. I don't think they've ever liked you, or me for that matter. You do too much for these people. They don't deserve your energy.

I want to spend that night with you, I have barely seen you lately. They have their own issues and busy lives. Leave them to it. Anything to pull you away from them, but make it look like they love you while doing it.

These are small, yet very real seeds a narcissist offers you to make you seem like there are problems that in fact, don't exist at all. That means the narcissist gets to stay safe, and you stay isolated.

And by the time you notice how small your world has become, you can't quite remember who cut who off. Was it you? Was it them? Sound familiar?

4 When you compare notes, you get the confirmation you didn't know you needed

Getting to compare notes with people means you first of all find out that you were not the crazy person you thought you were, and who the narcissist painted you to be. The fact that you were told all along that it's your imagination?

Well, that comes to an abrupt end when you start talking with other people about your experiences. You can convince yourself you were wrong, but as soon as someone else comes along to prove you wrong, you can start working together to put that puzzle in one big picture.

This is someone else who lived the same experience, and has their own version of the very same story you have. They have a different setting, a different time, and with different circumstances, but the narcissist was still involved, and this speaks volumes.

It's a huge moment where you are validated, and where all what you've been through is believed by someone, for the first time. It's not a moment to be overlooked, in fact, this is the start of your healing journey.

You certainly can't undo somebody telling you they know how you feel, and that they agree with you. One conversation is all it takes, too. Imagine if the narcissist were a fly on the wall listening to you comparing notes! It would be the end of the world for them.

It still is. They should be scared, because now you can build a team of allies.

That first person who says, yes, they did that to me too, becomes something the narcissist can never take back from you.

5 The powerless narcissist: Unable to twist the narrative of two people

The narcissist is powerful with one person, but when more get involved, they lose that power fast. Once they're powerless to the stories you've swapped and confirmed to be true, the narcissist will try their best to gaslight both people. You don't know what you're talking about.

You've got it all wrong. You have no idea. You're remembering it all wrong. You're not, and neither is the other person. Don't buy into the fact that these people are incredibly convincing when they want to be.

You have compared your experiences, and you will probably be discouraged from talking to them quite in the same way, if you weren't already. The drama for the narcissist doesn't need to be big, remember, they're scared right now.

It's all about damage control, but if you stand your ground, they will lose.

And notice how the gaslighting suddenly sounds thin when you've got someone next to you hearing the exact lines they were told two years ago.

6 The First Person You Talk To Is the Hardest

That first conversation is a mountain. You've spent so long doubting yourself that opening your mouth to a stranger, or worse, someone you used to know, feels like standing on the edge of something you can't take back.

Your hands might shake. Your voice might crack. You'll probably start with, "This is going to sound weird, but..." because you're still half expecting them to laugh at you or say you've got it all wrong.

You don't know if they'll believe you. You don't know if they'll go running back to the narcissist. You don't know if you're about to look completely unhinged in front of someone who might have loved this person too.

So you rehearse it. You water it down. You leave bits out just in case.

And then they say something small, something like, "Actually, yeah, I noticed that too," and your whole body exhales.

The hardest part was never the truth. It was working up the nerve to say the first sentence out loud to another human being.

7 What the Narcissist Does When They Sense You've Been Talking

Something shifts in them the moment they suspect two of you have been swapping stories. They can smell it. And their response is almost predictable once you know what to look for.

First, they get busy. Suddenly they're messaging people they haven't spoken to in months, sliding in a casual, "I don't know what she's been saying but just so you know…" They get in first, planting doubt before you can plant truth.

Then comes the sudden interest in you. Out of nowhere, they want to meet, they want to talk, they miss you. Really, they want to sniff out what you know and who you've been sitting across from.

If that fails, watch the temperature drop. Cold silence. A smear campaign warming up in the background. Sometimes a sudden new health scare or crisis that pulls attention back onto them.

They're not upset because you talked. They're upset because they can no longer control which version of them survives. And that loss of control is the thing they cannot stomach.
